As a general rule, if it looks like it spent a month in a parking lot, it probably did.

Note the rim areas. They should follow the edge of the coin, but not out of round like this damaged coin. Altered coins are just now damaged coins. Just a spender.

It didn't come from the mint looking like this. Post mint damage. How /when damaged? Who knows unless you were there.
