Many years ago I set out to put together a collection of 60 notable historical figures throughout history. I am now down to only needing an Arverni coin of the 1st century B.C. to represent Vercingetorix. This has been a really fun collection to put together and although not all of these are ancients, I thought I would share here. You can see them at: http://www.coincommunity.org/galler...p?album=1543(you might have to use the position controls to sort them in order) p.s. if you have an Arverni coin you want to sell, let me know! ;) Edited by MartiVltori 10/28/2022 3:48 pm

So what criteria did you use to select the notable figures?
I guess that anyone else would have a different mix, not that it matters.

@oriole I basically used 3 criteria:
1. Name recognition or notability. I wanted the people in this collection to mostly be recognized by those with even a casual interest in history. 2. The political or cultural influence the person had. 3. The ability to realistically acquire a coin to represent these people. This aspect definitely had a huge affect on the collection. For example, although I had always wanted Charlemagne and William I in the collection, for the longest time I was resigned to find others to fill those slots because they are just so expensive. I did get lucky on these two this year however and found examples (although worn and ragged) to represent them for a relatively affordable price.
In other cases some of these people did not actually have coins minted under their authority so the ability to associate a coin with a person in another manner. For example the Athens owl (from the same time period) for Pericles, the coins for Scipio and Hannibal. Ghengis Khan and Boudica are other examples of this.

@Martivitori, I liked that you included people from all over the world. I might have had a different mix but would have had a lot of the same people.

Very nice way to collect historically significant figures. Well done!

What a great idea for a collection. I love how the coins represent the different eras, even modern eg. JFK. Every coin has some history behind it and to tie a specific historical figure to it is awesome. Congrats
