I havent been able to find a nice classic head for my type set. This is mainly because I dont want a slick coin or one with poor surface quality. What are your thoughts one this one. Obviously the hole is distracting but the detail is great (aside from the scratches). Graded NGC Xf details holed. Not my coin seller photos. I've been collecting for a couple years... the price isn't outlandish. if you like it you arent getting robbed if it were me I would save and shop for an undamaged example unless I was building a type set that was all holed coins. a nice classic head cent is a very difficult thing to find and is going to cost a mint when you find it. the choice ones sell for a decent chunk above book price. they just dont come nice. if the empty spot in the set bothers you another option is to buy a junk one and then replace it later if you ever got a better example. you can pick up culls for about what any cull large cent runs. you can get dated one for 20 or 30 bucks pretty consistently. i think some of those scratches are on the coin. specifically the ones in this area. maybe ill get you for the secret santa exchange.

@Carrscoins, Appreciate the input. I am mainly a silver US coinage collector & just dabble in copper coinage. Although I would prefer one with nice clean surface rather than corroded ones (which seem vastly more common) I would rather not spend more than $300-$500 on one. & would much rather spend my money on a seated or bust dollar. Though my budget seems to be unrealistic to get a problem free one in Vf-Xf range. So I may just purchase a low grade filler until I decide to pay up for a nice one. I agree those larger scratches do appear to be on the coin & not the holder. I havent decided if I want to sign up for the secret santa yet, but appreciate the thought.

Appreciate you circumstances, but I would wait for an example without such jarring damage.

I'm obviously in the minority, and I'm sure a very small minority, but I like old holed coins. There's such natural history there because it was done for a purpose and not as vandalism.

Very nice, solid, corrosion-free surfaces; what a pity this coin was holed. The hole looks old. I can imagine this coin was pulled from circulation in XF condition and holed to create a jewelry piece. The coin was then able to avoid the heavy wear and corrosion you see on the typical Classic cent.

Definitely a keeper, but at 5% to10% value of the equivalent grade, problem free coin. A hole is major damage, unfortunately. I have a collection of about 20 holed US Half Dimes 3 Cents silver, and British silver Maundy coins, most probably recovered from jewelry, most acquired very cheaply.

I wonder if the person who put a hole through this is still alive. We'll teach him a lesson and make sure he holes no more coins! I like the coin. It has good eye appeal and sharp detail. I like how it is a earlier die state too with full dentils. The hole would probably kill it for me, but it is a nice coin otherwise.
