1969-D-Lincoln-Cent-

Is it common for the "D" mint mark on 1969-D Lincoln Cents to be struck so far off? To the left is a "common" example and the one to the right is the example I'm curious of.

@mint, that is a great question. At this time period, workers at the mint would apply the mintmark to the die by hand, and there was a pretty generous region allowed for placement. As a general rule, the mintmark must be touching some other design element in order for there to be a premium for misplaced mintmark.

placement not that usual when you realise the mm was applied by hand.

Nice comparison. As noted above, mint marks were placed by hand then and positional variations are not uncommon. In another example, the 1953 S Wheat cent shows interesting variation as well.

Also don't forget that there would probably be close to a million of these produced,
depending on how many were struck before the die was retired so they would not
be any more uncommon than any placement of the mint mark.

The mintmarks were punched into the dies and can vary in location or angles.

Still in the target area. To the right of the bust and below the date. They were hand punched until 1990.

Angles/shapes/locations are hand to identify a certain die. Post 1990 they are all in the same location for that year and mint.

good eye to notice, the 1969 cent is notorious for having examples with widely varying mint mark placement

They had a lot of leeway, just as long as it was beneath the date and to the right of Abe's coat they were fine.
