I was wondering .I have a Jefferson Whitman book 1938 - 1961, as I was looking through it I noticed that the dates 1942P,1942S,1943P,1943D,1943S,1944P,1944D,1944S,1945P,1945D, & 1945S have the word silver under these dates. So I was wondering if those dates were only made in silver.

yes only those date had silver in them because they need the nickel metal for such things as magnetos in the planes during WWII.

Yes those are the only dates that are made of silver. The composition in 40% Silver and in average condition somebody might pay $0.50 to $1.50 for it.

Although I do not have the greatest images, you might find my gallery on nickels here a bit helpful as I am sure you are looking at similar condition coins.

Both the CuNi alloy and 35% silver nickels were issued in 1942, you can easily distinguish them by the location of the mint marks.
