I was not sure what forum to post this in as there are now different subforums for coin grading. Has the grading criteria used by any or all of the TPG's changed overnight ? Did I miss something?

Need to be brought up to date. First off, this new STAR thing on NGC slabs. I read that this is supposed to have something to do with eye appeal. I thought eye appeal was already one of the factors involved in determining the overall grade of any coin. Is the old percentage of the different grading aspects totals, gone out the window? And also this new averaging out a grade. I.E.: If the coin has an MS-66 obv. and an MS-68 rev. they give it an MS-67 ? My experience is now and has always been, even if a coin was MS-69 obv. and happened to have an MS-63 rev. Then the coin is MS-63 period. lower grade side is it. Beside these two above listed examples, what else has changed and why ?

Ok, I am certainly no expert, but I will give you at least my opinion on the subject.

First the * designation. I think this comes into play when a coin is absolutely stunning from either original rainbow toning or the like or just a very original surface color, but several well placed dings limit the grade. So you could have a beautiful looking MS63 coin in essence.

As far as net grading, I think it's still subjective to be honest, and always will be. I would assume that your first example of the MS66 and MS68 turning into a MS67 was potentially always the case, new and old. I think the net grading is more pertinent in examples that say were destroyed/very worn on one side when the other is "pristine". In that case, I believe net grading is out the window. Something like AU55 on one side and F12 on the other shouldn't give you an EF coin. In that case I would believe that the coin should grade no higher than F12, maybe F15.

Hopefully that helps and doesn't confuse you more. I don't really use TPG's so it's hard to comment on their current grading with the exception of examples listed here for practice. Again, this is only my opinion.

It's all subjective, buy the coin not the slab.

IMO toning however "beautiful" is nasty. I personally just don't care for it.

Too many people call tarnish, toning. What's up with that? And rainbow toning always looks fake to me.

I know a lot of people love it, just not me.

I am inclined to agree with Quicksilver. Also my experience has always been the lower side wins the grade war, or at most the high side gets mentioned for what it is, I have never personally seen averaging the 2 sides.
