@coin, when the rim is extra heavy and the reeding is worn down like yours, we usually attribute this damage to being a Dryer Coin.

Flattened reeds on edge of the coin, from bouncing in a commercial dryer.
Note edge rounding covering the devices near the rim area. PSD.
Flattening of most of the raised devices from contact flattening on the coin.
Spender coin.
