interesting.
can you take more pictures? its hard to see much on what you have here. id love to see the back, any more spots where you can see the edge devices, and the date close up without all the editing stuff.
you will get better pictures if you put the coin on something and stabilize your camera using something like a tripod or in the case of a phone maybe something like a stack of books.
my first impression is that you have an s-73. that coin comes with a lettered edge. that coin also has the 5 distant from the bust.
ill puzzle over this coin and see if I can add a anything.
edit:
i popped it onto a photoshop variant and did some overlays. the LIB of LIBerty does not appear to have the correct kerning for an s-79. the letters are too widely spaced on your coin. I now think its an s-75 lettered edge. I would still like to see more pictures. a lettered edge 1795 might not be new house money like a reeded edge is but it is still a pretty tough coin and a heck of a metal detecting find.

thanks for adding those pictures. this is 1795 S-77. its a plain edge variety. I'm not sure what we are seeing on the edge there. the pickup that I used for the variety is the leaf below ME in aMErica on the reverse. it is centered between the M and E and distant from them both. thats the only thin planchet liberty cap variety with such a configuration. here is the finest known reeded edge (S-79) for reference. here is a really nice S-77

seriously cool find. I tell everyone who will listen about the Indian Head cent I found. I cant imagine how tired my family would be of hearing me talk about finding a liberty cap large cent! happy to help with the attribution.

it was a 1864 L on ribbon that I found on the ground at a second hand shop near my house. its somewhere in the good or vg range but its pretty problem free. it was in the furniture section, so it probably fell out of a coin collectors desk or something like that. that coin now resides in the "you can bury me with it" part of my collection. that box is all cheap stuff whose sentimental value is much higher than its financial value. I wrote a little blurb about finding it on the envelope so that when my family breaks up my collection they will understand why that one was saved.

Dagwood - glad to see you posted this here.
Carr - I saw this coin when he posted it on a FB group we're both in and encouraged him to post it here. If I understand what you posted, you're saying that S-77 (plain edge) and S-79 (reeded edge) have different reverses. I'm a complete novice with large cents, but I thought the reeded edge used the same reverse as one of the plain edge varieties? Do I have that wrong?

they are different obverse and reverse dies. the reverse die for S-77 is only used on S-77. the reverse die for the S-79 is only used on that liberty cap variety but it is also used on several 1796 draped bust varieties. S-106, 107, 108, 109, 110 and 111 all use the same die as the reeded edge.

Great find! What type of site did you find it at? I'm on a nearly 200 year old family centennial farm homestead and started detecting late last summer. Can't go 5' in any direction without a hit. No coins yet.
