@kac, best practice is to start a new thread for each new coin so I have split your thread in two.

Hopefully these are better! If you want anything else closer up just let me know. And I've had this coin for atleast 15 yrs now and I've never once polished it so as far as I know it hasnt been. Ive never even cleaned it with soap and waterbor nothing. Just keep things stored properly and best I can.

no one is saying you polished the coin. remember you have a coin thats 130yrs old. someone along the line may have.

still too much light. you cant use any type of lighting from overhead but these are better. I dont think the coin was polished it was the light source. based on your new photos I see a dull coin with minimal wear. I believe it was dipped at some point and most of the original surfaces have been removed. the dull fields are particularly noticeable on the right obv field as well as on the blow up of the reverse

I'm at AU details

Thank you both. Can someone tell in person if a coin has been dipped or cleaned before? Cause I'm assuming that knocks down the price some by the sounds of it. My phone just must take too bad of photos cause even the magnifying apps dont work but every picture I take no matter the light souce, it seems to shine too bright in pictures.

Im curious if it has been as well cause I'm the 3rd generation in ny family its been passed to and my grandfather says he didnt dip it when he had it either but theres still the time before us

yes it does. depending on how it was cleaned and if it did any damage detailed coins could be anywhere from 30%-80% off retail.

your last photos are pretty good other than glare. you need to try different location to get rid of it. window sill on a cloudy day. direct or overhead light wont work. just move it around. you could also try tilting the coin slightly

yes you can tell in almost all cases that coin has been cleaned in hand. if it was lighting dipped it could be market acceptable. if it was overdipped all the original skin will have been removed and the coin will appear dull. in your case, based in these photos, the coin may have been lighting dipped and all the surfaces may not have been removed but that large photo of the obverse really looks like its all removed.

grading by photo may not be accurate as we can only assess what we see. notice your original photos make the coin looks like it was polished where your other photos make it look dipped.

I totally get how it would be hard tell going off just photos, or off these. The first photo is def very shiney and bright but I'm just learning the best way to do these things. At first I assumed more light the better so itd show people more damages or etc the coins have or not. Seemed ok in my head at first when was thinking that way lol.. I appreciate your info in regards of cleaning. Ive been wondering more about it. I had cleaned some coins back when I was alot younger thinking why wouldnt someone want the coin in nicest shape possible but stopped. Atleast I had just cleaned them with a little soap and water and it was just some pennies
