I need help with the grade of this coin. The obverse looks terrible but the reverse Is completely different. I'm planning on paying $30 for this but I'm not sure if it is worth it or not. Any help would be appreciated.

Nice full breastplate, some chest feathers showing, so I'd say solid EF sharpness - but concerned it's been cleaned.

When I look at the obverse the first thing that comes into mind is that it was cleaned. That's holding me back from buying it.

If it had been cleaned earlier in it's circulation life, most of that evidence has been worn off with subsequent circulation.
I agree that it looks a bit lifeless with no luster at all in between the lettering; a later cleaning is probable, but wear is masking that probability. A period of an aggressive environment may also be possible for the lack of residual luster.
If I were to negotiate to buy it, I would suggest that is has been cleaned.
It must be remembered that it almost normal for American silver of this vintage and condition to have been cleaned at some time or other.
If you cannot be satisfied with cleaned coins at lower prices, then walk away.

Not sure I agree that it is "almost normal" for coins of this vintage and condition to have been cleaned, but I do think that in the case of a common date like this it would be best to wait for an original coin.

I am going to be different on this one. If you are going for a circulated set of walkers, I think it's worth it. Looking on ebay for sold ones I am not finding an EF for near this low. The lighting in the pic might also be what is making it look flat - LEDS can do this. I hate how almost every album of Walkers I see has a first page of smooth disks inside the holes. My strategy was to fill the holes with full rims and dates and then possibly update later. Not everyone follows this strategy. For 30.00, if mine was not good, I would spend the money...just me.

EF-40 and does not look cleaned to me. Too much dirt in the small protected areas.

Quote: does not look cleaned to me. Too much dirt in the small protected areas. That to me is a good indicator that the coin has been inexperiencedly cleaned . Unless it was harshly cleaned , then all areas would be free of dirt ,crud ,etc .

Not always the case T-Bop. Not only do we have to grade the coin but also the photo and it's lighting.
