Found this '77 D which came out of the last box I purchased & noticed the obvious obverse rim issue. From the 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock position, the rim is partially covering the words, In God We Trust. The edge of the coin from the 10-2 position is also altered, it should be smooth but has a sharp edge but the reverse has no signs of damage whatsoever. I'm leaning toward some kind of PMD but am uncertain. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

As that could not happen during the striking of the coin, then
it is PMD no matter how it happened.

Depending if the metal was enlarged on that area? When a partial collar happens the metal will swell outwards on that area:

Note the affected area reaches wider than the collar edge on the coin.

If the edge area we are looking at is not wider than the edge of the coin, then it might be altered? Note that is follows the edge like a partial collar? How would it be altered to look like that post strike? So place this coin over a normal coin if the edge is wider on that area, then it would be a partial collar. The circulation could have altered that extended edge?

@John1 & JimmyD.... thanks for the confirmation. @coop.... did a side-by-side comparison w/ another coin & the '77 edge is unfortunately a bit thinner.

Looks like it was scraped on the sidewalk on the obverse.
