We all know the US Mint is trying to get people excited about collecting coins again with the State/Park Quarter Program, and the Presidential dollars, etc.

But The Royal Mint in the UK has come up with an ingenious gimmick to get people excited about collecting their coins (including myself!), check this out:

Getting-People-Excited-About-Coins...

When each of their fractionals are placed beside each other, they form one picture of the Royal Sheild. How amazing is that?

I love it.

One of my friends who lives in the UK recorded a short video showing me the coins and how they "fit together". He knows I've recently become a collector and got a set of these from The Royal Mint, they're in the mail now. =)

It is still difficult to put together a complete 2008 set of the Royal Sheild design from circulation. Have yet to see any 2009 dated coins either.

Looks like the 08 sets are sold out at The Royal Mint, not sure how long ago he bought this. (mint sets limited to 100,000) You can still get the 08 sets on ebay though: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...270323880386

The 09 sets are still available through the mint: http://www.royalmint.com/store/Brit...se/DU09.aspx

EDIT: That is not a link to my ebay auction, just one I found, not trying to sell anything here, I just LOVE this design.

EDIT AGAIN: After talking to my friend he said that 08 was the first year they did this, so those first year sets will probably be very hard to find.

When they first came out last year, these coins were discussed at length in the UK coins subforum; the main thread is here.

I have a set from circulation, along with a proof set from the mint.

They are nice as a set, but individually a couple of them are little strange in change.

One thing about the designs is that the circulation pieces, when BU, tend to look prooflike, almost frosted because of the style of engraving.

They are quite eyecatching.

Now that is really amazing. I want one too. And I see where this is going. You buy a couple of UK coins. What's the harm, right? And before you know it, you're hooked on world coins too...

Rest in Peace

They sold sets of both the old design and new design dated 2008 last year. I purchased a base medal set of each.

Don't know if I am going to purchase a base medal set this year.

I still enjoy looking to change and finding something new.

I got the 2008 base and silver proof sets when they first came out, and was impressed with them. Good luck finding a silver set from 2008, I have never seen one for sale since they sold out at the mint.

I just checked, and ebay has many '08 base metal sets (ordinary and proof) available.

What happens when people start breaking up the sets and selling them separately?
People will be looking for pieces of the shield to make it whole...sounds like fun!

Not sure who thinks the US Mint is trying to inspire people to collect coins. Actually they are in the process of doing the same as with the Stamp Collecting, ruin the entire hobby with stupid types of coins. And don't forget the proof of this is we just have to have a pile of people on our coins. No longer Liberty standing, sitting, walking, just a lot of dead people's faces. It the UK wants to make coins that are distinctive, pretty, imaginative, so let them. We have a bunch of dead presidents and their wives on ours. Yes many countries have fantastically decorative coins that are very decorative, artistic looking but we have our dead presidents on ours. That is one thing that is done here better than most places. We take a hobby and distroy it. Beanie Babies were over done. Baseball/Football cards, Hot Wheel/Match Box cars and yes US Postage stamps now slowly sinking into the sunset by massive overkill.
I predict soon our coins will have all the Movie Stars, WWE wrestlers, Al Capone and your wife's cousin Gertrude on them.
There is no way we well be intimidated with nice looking coins from other countries. Hasn't worked before so why now?

I don't think people will break up the sets since base metal coins can all be found in circulation.

I actually like the older US coins before former presidents appeared.

I do agree that various world mints have started making too many coins each year rather than a commerative coin for a special reason.
