Hello Everyone!

I just found this penny while searching through my coins and would like some insight on this one. I thought that it might be Machine Doubling but looks to me like raised edges. Am I just seeing what I would like to see? There also appears to be some doubling on the edge of shirt and upper chin. Thank you for all your help!

A doubled die will be raised, not flattened:

This will be hub doubling on the die, thus a doubled die. Your coin is a striking issue, not a doubled die issue. Machine Doubling is common and can happen even on doubled dies. But Machine Doubling never creates a doubled die.

First clue?
1. Note the affected areas are flat on the inside and outside edges of the devices. On a doubled die, the spread will be raised and show the contour on the affected devices.

Note the pushed metal can be taller than the normal height of the devices. The metal has to go somewhere?

2. Note the flattening is forming a 90 degree angle where the contour was removed. Flat, not raised like a doubled die would be. This is common and a striking issue, not a die issue. (Only a doubled die can strike a doubled die coin)

3. The devices will be enlarged by the spread on a doubled die.

Note the contour of the devices. Machine Doubling removes this.

CoopHome: Why is Machine Doubling common? caused by the machine with slight looseness of the machine. happens on normal and doubled dies. but never creates a doubled die. a doubled die is caused on the die, not by the machine.
