What does it mean when a PCGS slabbed coin is designated only as 'Genuine' without a grade assigned? Does it mean that it's not counterfeit, or that surfaces are genuine, or something else altogether? Thanks in advance.

It's a brand new service PCGS has announced for "problem coins". These are coins that have been cleaned, rim nick, environmental damage, holed, etc. They will slab your coin, (if genuine), and give it a "no grade" but guarantee it's authenticity. They will bodybag counterfeit coins or coins with excessive pvc damage and send them back to you.

They're in cute little styrofoam-ish 'envelopes' containing the coin in the flip with their sticker on it designating the coin and what the problem is. My last one was on a large cent. I forget the year so I'm guessing here, but it said something along the lines of "1804 Large Cent" and "Surfaces Tooled".

They are returned in a mylar 2.5 X 2.5 with the reason (numbered code), attached to the flip.

And before someone asks, no, I had no idea there were any tooled surfaces or I wouldn't have bothered buying it, let alone send it to be graded. Just goes to show how a little experience would go a long way. Hopefully I'll get to a level where I'll be able to tell these things

Seems that recent NGC has tightened its grading. Many come back with claimed issues.
