Some PCGS slabs have a line that says something like:

Series: 32 Coin: 34

While other coins will not have this on them. I've seen coins of the same type, in slabs that were made in the same time frame (identical design and label)...some with the series line, and some without.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

steve

Series refers to the coin type and coin refers to the date and mintmark where applicable.

Thanks Dave, I'm was trying to understand why some slabs don't have "series" and "coin", while others do.

Okay, here's a (bad) pic of what I'm talking about, with the slabs themselves appearing to be from the same timeframe:

PCGS-Series-And-Coin

The 1957 dime is the 33rd Roosevelt dime on a PCGS list (skipping the FB's, which would be a different series).

Now I know what you are saying. I have wondered this myself. I have a couple PCGS slabs like this. Laziness on PCGS's part Let's see if someone else here can help us out.

I believe PCGS has just discontinued their practice of including the series and number information on the insert. Coins they graded for me 2 or 3 years ago had this information, but those slabbed more recently do not. Things were probably getting pretty confused with the addition of FB, FH, CAM and DCAM designations, etc. so maybe this was the easy solution. No big loss, IMO.

PCGS first began using the Coin and Series numbers in Dec 1998 on the PCGS 8 slab. Those had the serial number on the back label. The first one that Steve199 shows is PCGS 13 that they stated using in 2002 when the barcode returned to the front label (Coin and Series numbers first appeared in Dec 1998). The one on the right is probably a PCGS 21 that they started using in 2006. when they dropped the Coin and Series numbers because no one outside of PCGS was bothering to use them. (They still use them internally) There were two other generations of slabs for circulation coins between PCGS 13 and 21 (PCGS 16 and 19) but they involved changes in the hologram on the back of the slab. (The other numbers between 13 and 21 are for slab varieties used for Eagles and multi-coin holders.)
