I recently got this 1934 threepence in a large estate sale lot. I thought it may be an overdate as there appears to be a small marker of it on the 4, and possibly on the tip of the 3, but I am a complete amateur when it comes to identifying these things and this doesn't seem as clear cut (if it is indeed an overdate) as online examples. Any help would be much appreciated!

It looks like the '4' may have taken a tiny hit.

Yes,wide ornament as well, overdates with these are rare.Looks like a bit of doubling going on as well.

Looks like something under the 4,probably need a close up USB scope of the 4.

Thanks for your help Sel and Basil, I unfortunately don't have a usb microscope but will think about getting one.
Basil - would you be able to elaborate on the "ornament"? I assume you mean the decoration around the date, but can't find any information about a wide type.

Also, it does look like doubling on the three, but numista has an arrow here pointing to a sign of the overdate, hence adding to my uncertainty.
Thanks again.

Hi Totty, yes its the little ornament/decoration alongside the 4.
In the majority of overdates for that year the ornament is close to the 4,however the wider spaced ornament does have a overdate variety but very rare,i have a couple somewhere, will post pic. if I can find them.

Yes,get a USB scope, only around A$25,they are great for situations like this, trying to work out what's under the 4.

This is my Brothers Coin, early attempt by the Mint to modify 1933 Dies during the Depression,Text Book eg.

@basil, what is a good magnification? I have a 500x which is good for observing bacteria but useless for coins? Maybe a 50x?

Until Basils posting I didn't even know there was a wide date overdate in the threepence. Now another variety to hunt for. BTW that is a nice sharp image of the fine details.

Definitely not a 3 under the 4 but like you's said need higher resolution and magnification images just too find out if it is a number there or doubling.

Need a high grade example to determine what exactly is under that 4. Might just be random bumps, lumps, deterioration and defects on a standard working die that somewhat look like it might be an overdate to our imagination
