I have a few questions about the 1939 P, wheat, posted in two pictures (scans, actually). 1) how could a coin with so much wear have what appears to be "luster" in the low set areas, ie - between the wheat stocks and the rim, and above and below "liberty"? 2) What is the "flaking" metal along the inside of the rim on both the obverse and reverse? on the reverse - most noticeably between the right wheat stock and the rim? 3) is the thickness in all the lettering including the date - all due to general wear? opinions and values - are appreciated. thanks.

Appears to me that you have a coin that was lacquered. It has luster because the lacquer hasn't worn off of those areas.

Probably lacquer thinner would remove it. Just don't get that on your hands/arms/body. It is real nasty on bare skin.
