The deep copper luster made me look before I threw it in the penny jar. I took out what I thought was a new shield penny to compare it to and that one was a 1967! Surprised there were pennies that old in circulation in that condition. I have a few k to go through as I have been saving them a long time.
Yes, these early to late '60s memorial cents in great condition do show up occasionally. In some cases, these coins were sitting in a jar or drawer for many, many years and were spared heavy circulationToo, some collectors dump parts of their collection into circulation after hoarding coins for decades. Last month I rolled 50 cents worth of 1963 memorials--all were AU58+ to MS63 red. Deposited them, along with many other roles at my bank.
Nice find! Memorial cents are more resilient to toning than wheat cents are. They can remain red much longer, it always amazes me. It's not uncommon to find one worn to VF-EF and still has a lot of red. Just a little wear on this one IMO.
