The peak of the "BIE" years seems to be 1957, with many on both the P and D coins. But for whatever reason, the mint seems to have figured it mostly out and for 1958 there are almost none and those are hard to find. Just pulled this one out of a bag, and it's a big "EIR". Decided to photograph it since the one on cuds-on-coins is a bit worn and this one shows all the detail. And it's really quite tall, which doesn't show up in the images very well.

Nice chunky LDB, looks like a heart with aorta and other valves.

Great condition example and photos TB

This is a good reference list for everyone to use, most are familiar with the 'BIE' variety to look for, but actually it depends on the location of the die break in the word liberty with yours as you pointed out being an II-F-5: "EIR" Variety since its between the E and R of LIBERTY (BIE variety is between the B and E) and these and others continued in 1958 and beyond actually, so PLENTY out there to look for and these do sell, especially in quality condition like yours.

You're so right about the years of the BIES.

That's why I save any in modern coins, as well as other die chips in any dates or letters. Just don't come across them very often.

Thanks for the wonderful comments! Years ago I saw on ebay a set of one BIE from each of the years in the 50s. I didn't pay much attention but remember it went cheap and thought I should have bought it. But along the way, attributing a BIE now and again, it seems I now have one from each year from 1949-1960 including the quite rare 1959-D. The 49-D is the discovery coin and both that one and the 59-D are plate coins on cuds-on-coins. Funny how that sort of ended up coming together over time.
