This is one of the most difficult doubled dies to acquire in the Lincoln series. Many are worth a lot more, but this one is rare squared. Partly because no one knows about it to look for it, and partly because until I found this one I always thought it would only be visible in very early die stage.

So I cherrypicked this off ebay over the weekend, based on nothing more than a blur to the right of the 4 in the date. It looked good and the mint mark position seemed right. Been hoping and carrying every good luck charm I've got ever since. And it worked!

This would clearly be die stage B for the coin, as it shows different die scratches on the reverse so the die has been polished at least once. And the doubling is rather more soft than in the stage A as well. Probably should send it over to Dr. Wiles to get it listed as a new die stage just for the new markers on the reverse.

So finally filled this very tough hole in my DDO-001 series!

Nice find! I can't say I have been looking for this one, I first saw this one on VV a few months ago and I haven't gone through any wheats since. I made a list of what Wheat cent dates would be the best to get rolls of for varieties, I starred 1949-D and put it higher on the list because I thought this DDO was interesting. Never got any rolls of 49-D yet though.

To say "great eye" would be a gross understatement. Congratulation.

Nice pick and nice looking grade. That is a substantial offset on that 4. Well played sir.

EDIT: It looks to go MS 64 pretty easily.

Hey Stoneman, This was one of my top three, but they are all pretty much a tie so call it a score off the top of my hit list as well. Took me two years to find one, but if things work as they usually do now that one has shown up another one or two more will pop up soon. It's just a question of who finds those other ones!

The location of the mint mark is correct. But the '4' area looks a bit different than the V.V. example:

But the view is a lot closer on this area on the CONECA example.

It only took me three and a half years, but I finally got this one slabbed for my DDO-001 collection. It is verified as DDO-001 and I think they even sent it off for verification as the submission was listed as "consultant" for a couple weeks. But it came back ANACS MS 65 RED so pretty pleased with that result.

I do not know. I am one of the most beginner in the penny and cents. Except I see something in 949 and a superb coin nothing more. Not many descriptive for this Red coin. I think for me this coin is like meteo media here: 14 hours of snow just 2 cm but first hour 5 cm. This it is for me now. I will go further to see and understand this one.

Superb coin which come to be a rare and hard to catch. I am glad for you TROP
