Hi. Could someone please grade this coin for me. I am tossing up with either F or VF, but I'm no expert. Would love to get others opinions. Also if anyone has a catalog that shows value of pre 1900 coins, a valuation on this would be nice. Sorry the image of the reverse is a bit dark. Thank you. Steve

Ewww, what happened to the poor thing? Looks like a shipwreck or detector find? Sorry, triggersmob, but with all that pitting and corrosion I wouldn't grade that coin higher than About Good from the photo. CV: $30 in Krause for a Fine; the catalogue doesn't list grades lower than that. I wouldn't expect it to be worth too much above bullion.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I can see the date and all the lettering on the obverse, but the reverse does let it down in the Photo. The grade might be "Good" if it looks better in the flesh than in the photo.
Still, It's a coin from 1850, and a fantastic piece of history.

Thanks Guys, It does look better in the flesh, the photo does not do it justice. I tried under all sorts of different lighting, but just could not get it to photogragh well. Regards Steve

It looks like it has Fine details, but the corrosion would force it to a net G4 grade in my opinion. By the way, it's great to see a coin other than a US one in this section! Keep them coming. I want to learn how to grade World coins.

Yep, I see that some of you have already gave it what I was going to say- About Good-at best. As to values of British coins- for the better grades, you might try "Coincraft- Standard Catalog of Great Britain and UK-- Habiru001

Since the thread is dealing with grading coins. -For what it is worth?--I see these posts started out to be on Grading- also that some of you typed in the grades--or definitions etc; That certainly can be helpful. I would like to add here what has been invaluable to me in my later years of collecting- Now when I started, we only had one grade system and it was known as Brown and Dunn- I think I still have that little book- However, as this Hobby of Kings grew, grading evolved into more definite specifics as you all know. SInce the (MS) grading started (and I didn't like it- for various reasons) I purchased the Official A.N.A. Grading Standards booklet that coveres grading by the MS definitions attached to photos. It is invaluable- Whenever we traveled. This among several other Numismatic books went with us. This book will clearify and put you at ease with your grading. It is not for error collectors or VAM collectors But deals strictly with MS Grading.
