It looks like it was plated. Am I wrong?

In-hand it does not look like a plated coin, but I could be wrong. I'm curious to hear what others may think about that. I did find the color to be bright and a bit odd, I wrote that off to it being an album coin.
I will take some different photos in a few and post them.

After taking these photos I would say you are right about the coin being plated. Especially photos 3 & 4. I have never had any plated coins before, so this cent will be a good learning tool. Thanks!

The good: Looks like a well-struck coin with no wear. Surfaces have intact flowlines. Great design details remaining.
The bad: Coin has flat-looking surfaces and color with oxidation that is a little short of attractive.
Netnet: Coin looks borderline details due to surfaces that look short of luster for such a high grade coin. Attractive but for the oxidation spots.

I see no circulation wear and nice full strikes on obv and reverse. its a nice album coin as its been fiddled with in one fashion or another. Most high AU and above Indians will still have some luster squeezed into those low areas between rim and devices and I don't see any on either side of your example - UNC "details" for me. Still a sharp coin i.m.o.

I perceived bubbles all over the coin, and the transition from golden to dark colors seem like places where the plating rubbed or flaked off, like the nose and eyebrow. That's why I thought plated (or painted).

Just for reference. The album this coin came in I ended up throwing away. The first page (cent page) appeared to have gotten totally wet and dried on its own, It was crunchy. The top of the second page showed damage, but the back of the second page & rest of the pages looked fine. The album had a mildew smell and I found some black spots here and there, so I took all the coins out and tossed the album. This 1940 LWC also came in this album and was of course on the same cent page. It turned out to be a toned proof, I wonder if the wild toning came from the same conditions that impaired the surfaces on the 1901 cent. http://goccf.com/t/418477&SearchTerms=1940

Common date to begin with, very little collector appeal as such. Some coin doctor might snap it up, but I wouldn't offer twenty bucks for it.
