Hello, I stumbled across a Wheat penny collection and now I'm obsessed with collecting. Starting with the usually coin books but I am interested in error coins, I call it the Powerball collecting. Since my eyes are old I got a microscope and a scale to weight my coins.
I am baffled by grading so can anyone recommend resources to learn the basics?
Hoping to expand my knowledge and to keep on checking my pocket change!
that link is for PCGS Photograde. PCGS is a quality third party grading company. photograde gives you some really nice pictures of coins in a spread of conditions. its a great reference for grading.
they also offer a free phone app called coinfacts" its great.
Gregg6170 I keep all my change and look for error coins. I separate in to penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. I have lists of the most common errors and die verities by denomination. Each coin denomination is searched and compared to said lists. Grading is not important until an error coin or Die Variety is found.
Gregg6170, in addition to the aforementioned photogade and coin facts, I would recommend "The Official American Numismatic Association Grading Standards for United States coins." It is an excellent intro to grading along with pictures and descriptions of the coins and pictures at various grade ranges.
