I was going through some old US coins passed down from my mother hoping to spy some anomalies and this '42 Wheat penny caught my eye. I'm guessing this was a minting error? I apologize I cannot get better photos. It has wear, but do I see doubling? LIBERTY looks like it just woke from bed and needs a cup of java. I'm grasping.

No - it is not a mint error. Everything you see on that coin happened as damage post mint when the coin was in circulation.

@lone, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree with @nic, that this coin is heavily damaged. The metal has been moved around in multiple areas, including the rim, LIBERTY, and the date. There really isn't much numismatic value here. With that said, keeping coins that were collected by our parents is a neat connection to the past.

Thank you both for the prompt response. Yes, I'll probably not trade any of them in my lifetime.

Agree with the above, post-strike damage--to include staining.

Intentional post mint damage. How damaged? Unless you were there we will never know. Damage is damage. .
