Hey so I'm looking at buying this coin and some miscellaneous other indian /wheat pennies & I'm wondering what you think this coin is worth. I want to make sure I don't overpay. There's obviously a big PMD on obverse. Ty!! Edited by Ondiwave 12/31/2022 11:06 am

that looks an awful lot like someone carved the masons square and compass into the coin. from that I would assume it was probably someones pocket piece at some point. to the right person that sort of thing is a plus rather than a negative. this one is pretty crude though and many mason coins are very skillfully engraved.
if I were the grader on this id put it at the upper end of good and I would give it a details designation for the graffiti.

For many collectors, graffiti is the worst type of damage to a coin, and I would personally avoid buying this regardless of cost.

Not one I'd buy. It would be very hard to sell when the time came to part with it.

Valued really for its silver content, although a Mason might like it as a companion for a lodge penny. Looks like it was a nice average circulated Bust before that.

a collector is not going to want a coin with graffiti especially since the 36 is a more common year. Pass my friend. you will never get out of it what you pay for it.

Quote: you will never get out of it what you pay for it. doesn't that kind of depend on the price point? if you get it for $15 (almost twice the metal content) you'll find it very easy to get your money back out of it. I dont think youd have much trouble getting $30 out of it. I doubt you could get $50. $30 is almost 4X silver content and a better multiplier than many slabbed pre '33 gold coins or most of the ASEs. everyone would agree that those are collectible. why not this coin? it gets that 4x multiplier because people love these types of things. there are significantly more buyers for cull bust halves than there are for high grade examples.

You will not get that coin for $15 unless the seller doesn't know what he's doing . I am also one that will never buy a coin with graffiti or even harshly damaged . IMHO I would pass on this purchase .

I would put the value on the coin based on past ebay sales at $30 to $35.

i think it would be more constructive to talk about how much you would have to spend to get a problem free example with similar wear. there are several pretty decent ones on ebay around $60. that means a patient buyer could probably pick one up for $45 or so. is the discount worth the damage? its impossible to know that without knowing what this coin is priced at and the OPs budget. maybe OP is a mason and finds the graffiti attractive for that reason. its a bad buy at $100 but what about $40? $30? $20? I will buy as many as I can afford with my cash on hand at $20. silver content is what $9? I will mortgage my house to buy them at $9. the point I'm trying to make here is that there are collectors for this. they will pay a decent chunk more than its silver content. at the right price its a great piece of history. many coin collectors would be thrilled to have this in their collection. you just need to get it at the right price.

Of course you shouldn't buy it. If you want my opinion on value: $20 tops.

1836 is a date that is difficult to get in attractive condition in the middle to higher grades. Even though a small problem coin may need to be settled for, this damage is way too significant. I wouldn't pay more than $20.
I actually recognize that grafitti. I had an 1800 bust dollar with the same style A in the obverse field. Likely coincidence.

Agree, no more than $20 and I'd rather you pass altogether. Easy to buy, tough to sell.

I'd not be interested in this coin - just my opinion of course.1836 is not an expensive coin and I'd look for a problem free coin.
