1975-D-Mint-Mark-Possible-Error

The D is directly under the 7 and there is what appears to be a gouge coming from top left if it. Is this considered an error? If so, it would be my first find.

Mm seems to be within variance to me, the gouge however kind of just looks like a dirt stain or some environmental stain to me

You were right. I took a toothbrush with a little water and was able to remove the dirt, was not a gouge. I have a lot of learning to do and appreciate the help.

Np we all have to start somewhere but plllleeeeaaase don't take a toothbrush or anything rough to a coin. If I was wrong and it was something you could have damaged the coin and ruined any value it might have. If you must do anything to try and "clean" a coin use a microfiber cloth and just ever so gently wipe it.

That being said, please don't clean your coins even in experienced hands it can be detrimental to any value or collectors appeal it may have.

Invest in a can of pure acetone and not nail polish. You can but it from a hard store. Just soak a coin in it and pat dry.

Interesting find. The mintmarks were added to the business strike dies by hand until 1989 and so the position of the mintmark placement and its shape will vary on each individual die. Slight variation in position is perfectly normal but yes its a good catch to see its different than what it looks like normally https://www.PCGS.com/coinfacts/coin...d-1c-rd/2979 Sometimes when the mintmark is misplaced there is added value as with the 1975-D Nickel where the mintmark was high in some cases, that MrJ happened to find one of those.
