There is an old adage that goes "if you nail two things together that have never been nailed together before, someone will buy it". Guess this guy was testing the theory.

well some people like putting low grade coins together, and some people even have low grade registry sets where they get the lowest grade coin they can find for the set and it has to be slabbed to qualify for the registry so that could be one reason to have it slabbed

That coin looks cleaned (surprising that PCGS didn't body bag it) and way undergraded. Hair detail alone should give that a Fine. Can't see enough details on the reverse, but that coin is at least a Fine, I think

This is really becoming common. At coin shows all the time I see coins worth a fraction of the slabbing fees. And when you throw in postage, insurances, they have spent a lot more. WHY? I don't think even the people that do that know what they are doing. However, there are an increasing amount of slabbed coin people out there. They only buy slabbed coins and then too, there are those that know this. I've seen brand new coins from the late 90's to present in slabs. Coins you could find in change and there they are in a slab. Just once I would like to meet a person that did that and ask them WHY?

I don't know why, but if you find one of them, let me know. I want some MS-65 moderns for my type set and am not any good at grading at that level, so my best option is people who were hoping for an MS-68 slab and got disappointed.

Quote: At coin shows all the time I see coins worth a fraction of the slabbing fees Sometimes PCGS has free slabbing of a certain type of coin for its members so that could be one way these are getting slabbed, another could be they have a voucher for lets say 5 free gradings and they only have 3 or 4 coins they want graded so they just throw some of these other coins in there to finish up the gradings that are free (because you can't use 3 one time and them send you a voucher for the other 2, they all have to be sent in at the same time)

I've hear that too from PCGS members but that really doesn't explain a typical 2004 Lincoln Cent in a PCGS slab graded as MS-62. But why not just wait until you do have something to grade? Or ask someone if they want something graded? And obviously something is wrong when those appear for sale. I'm just confused. I know what your saying and that is probably the reason, but I still wouldn't do it and not sure what would make someone do that for a coin worth nothing except the plastic of the slab. Maybe I'm old but I sure would like to meet a person that had a nothing coin graded and ask WHY, WHY, WHY.

I don't even think of sending a coin to PCGS unless the coin is worth at least $150. Really, what's the point? They nail you in return fees and grading fees so if your coin is not at least worth that, keep it raw. Just my opinion.

Could it be one of those Chinese fake slabs? Why not go to the opposite end of the grading spectrum?

Should have sent it to SGS, could have netted it a MS-60

Ya can't fixed stupid Can you have a whole bunch done for free after you've paid for one or do you have to pay $$$'s for each slab you want?
