Hi there!! I've been lurking this forum for a long while, but I finally made an account to start posting here!
I have a possible no-brainer dumb question about a penny I found!

I found this 1987-D Penny that has these weird and perfect-shaped indents along the rim, both on the front and back! I tried researching it and couldn't find anything exactly like it, but I might not be researching the right thing.
Or, if its just damage then please feel free to make fun of me! I just thought it wouldn't hurt to ask haha

Odd looking. I was going to say PMD right off the bat, but the 'dents' are contained and don't completely breech the rim..

@rem , first welcome to CCF. Second, you are asking a valid question and while you are being very nicely light-hearted, we do try very hard to make this site friendly to all.

With regard to this cent, those flat spots look like damage to me, especially if they line up between the front and back of the coin. If so, then they were likely created by someone with a pair of wire-cutters or similar.

That was my first thought Spence, but the marks are on the upper half on the coin (as you look at each side individually) the obverse mark is not oriented directly over the reverse mark, further more the rim behind each mark seems to be untouched.

Ah yep thx for pointing that out I didn't look closely enough. They still have to be mechanical damage though, right? The rim can't be struck up fully in this sort of interrupted fashion I think.

I think it is some type of PMD.

I'm not too sure.
From what I'm seeing around the 'dents' I'm not seeing any welling up of any displaced metal, the rims are not bulging outwards, and as I stated, just opposite the 'dents' I don't see any tool marks or a bump on the opposite side.

It's a MYSTERY..

Could be from a candy or toy slot machine? Note how the sharp curve "pointed part" are in the same direction like a mechanical device is grabbing the coin when someone is turning a handle.
