Maybe you should submit without specifying a crossover? Seems like then you would know. You already have an AU Details coin so getting the same from PCGS with something besides Chopmarked isn't a big difference, is it? You're trying to force them to give you a straight grade but when they don't, you don't know why. Yes, NGC has graded them chopmarked and also scratched, repaired, cleaned, etc, but we don't know if they've always done that or changed at some point (ask them?). You're hedging your bets with these crossovers and I'm not sure why. I would just have them grade it and take what you get.

Fair enough! Ultimately my goal is for straight grades for a registry set so my hedge was that if I received a PCGS details coin I'd end up needing to sell and replace it, and might have an easier time doing so in the original NGC holder without whatever flaws (or simply lower grades) PCGS might be picking up on. You're right I have no idea how long they've been adding multiple details notes. I'm definitely naive on this.

There are some photos of crossed NGC chop marked that crossed to PCGS in a PCGS thread. A 1874 S NGC UNC details chop marked crossed at AU55 and a 1873 CC NGC AU details chop marked crossed at XF40. Both of these coins that crossed were conversely down graded by PCGS. It appears best to crack out the NGC chop mark details coin, than to try and cross into a straight grade.

Extremely helpful, thanks Slider! I also just got the above 78-S NGC AU Details Chopmarked T$ back from PCGS in the mail and was actually very pleased to see that they rubber banded a paper label to the returned NGC holder stating "Do Not Holder - Cleaned". So they did provide a reason after all! The 76-CC that I started this thread with did not have a reason on the paper label when it was returned to me - I think it just said DNC. My submission with the 78-S also included a 77-S that came back "Do Not Holder - Environmental Damage" which I am not surprised to see. Anyhow very glad to have this information.

Buying NGC Trade dollars with chop mark details is a slippery slope if you are trying to get a straight graded coin. Most collectors know that PCGS will straight grade a chop mark Trade dollar, so the quality problem free Trade dollar chops would be sent to PCGS. Since 2003 PCGS has been straight grading chops, so there would have been plenty of time to cherry pick the best NGC chop mark holders. A lot of the NGC details chop mark examples have cleaning hair line issues. There are still some quality NGC chop mark details holders out there, but it appears that NCG did not scrutinize the chop mark details holders to be sold as problem free examples.
