Some of my estate sale contacts referred some heirs to me that want to sell a collection of US & foreign coins. I can tell from the US coins that the person who put the collection together was knowledgeable. I'm confident with the US coins. The foreign is definitely outside my wheelhouse. This coin weighs 24.9 grams & is 37 mm in diameter. Looking for authenticity & grade opinions.

The coin depicts Alfonso XII and appears with the Spanish coat of arms reduced to the symbols of Castile, Leon and Granada. I don't want to give a History of Spain class, but that was the normal way of representing the Spanish coat of arms at the beginning of his reign. Later the symbols of Aragon and Navarre were included in the coat of arms.
From the photo it looks authentic to me, but it must be taken into account that many copies were made in 18 karat gold to be used as jewelry. These copies were cast, not minted.

About the grade, you have to take into account first of all if you see the numbers of the stars. Next to the date 1876, which is when the order was given to mint this design for the first time, you will see that there are two six-pointed stars. These stars mean that the coin was minted at the el mint and must have the actual mintage dates engraved on them. On the first one you should see the number 18 and on the second one you can see the number 76. The price of the coin drops a lot if you can see the two numbers, one or none.

In this Spaniad coin there is a thread about just this coin

Hello, colleague ''AGENT007'' from Alabama! (I have chosen to ''call'' you like this as you have a so ''hard'' pseudo).
About your coin and without been disrespectful to other colleagues who gave you already their reply/opinion,I want to tell you:
1)I GUARANTEE the authenticity of this silver spanish coin! So,it is 100% from mainland Spain (NOT from other country or spanish colony) ; and we don't speak about a gold 5 pesetas coin but of a silver coin which minting weight was 25g.(minus a bit of circulation wear = 24.9g.).That is as normal as it may be!
2)The ''problem'' with the 2 stars that are placed right/left the large date: By no means, they do not show the mintage number of pieces & have nothing to do with the grade of a coin (its quality=state of conservation). The stars show ONLY THE ACTUAL MINTING YEAR of that coin! The large year is the first year of the type. Some newer spanish coins have the same year written in large figures and on the stars,AS YOUR COIN surely has: 18 - 76 (1876).
3)In my opinion, your coin may be graded as XF40. But, please keep in mind that more than 8.5 million pieces were minted in 1876 & catalogue values are indicatives only. Spanish silver 5 pesetas coins of kings Amadeo I(elected,of Savoy),Alphonso XII & Alphonso XIII (legitimists,of Bourbon) can be found quite often.

In this KM ''World Coins'' page you may see that the actual minting year of coins is that in () & can be found on the 2 small stars.
King Amedeo's coins bear the ''frozen'' large date 1871,the actual issue date is given in ()
Your coin of Alphonso XII has the same date 1876,large and ín ().

Hope everything is clear now.
Friendly yours,Andi
