It's a well-circulated silver War Nickel, 35% silver by weight. At today's spot price ($23.73/troy oz), the melt value is about $ 1.34. Because so many of these were minted, there is really not much premium until you get to the mint state grade.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

kidswillplay2018,

I agree with Hondo Boguss. Also, that scratch obverse and reverse ruins any collector value.

Agreed, this is a well circulated 35% silver War Nickel. Common date of a common coin and no real numismatic value - although there is the silver melt value.

Agree with all above. Hang onto it if you like it. I have a couple tubes full of similar, well-worn wartime nickels.

You can buy whole sets of the War Nickels for $30-$50. They're fun to have in a collection. Personally, I would drop that one back into circulation for a early youngen collector to find and be thrilled to have found it! That said, if you like it, keep it.
