I found this recently while arrowhead hunting, they had just turned the dirt in the field and it was sitting on the surface. I come across coins every now and then by accident but I've never found one that was near this old.. I called my friend that collects coins right after I found it and he said it might be valuable and not to clean it so the only thing ive done is pour the water bottle I had over it to rinse the dirt off.. I did a Google search and it seemed like they were worth a decent amount of money if they had graded a decent number, my question is how good of shape is it in? I'm not going to sell it but I'm either going to have it sent in and graded for it to be in a case and be more eye appealing or I'm going to take the black off if it isn't worth much, I'm not a fan of the patina or tarnish or whatever is on it. I haven't put my other coins in my cases of arrowheads but I think this one deserves it. opinions are appreciated. Edited by dka44 01/13/2023 03:56 am

it looks like the dashed lines near the edge are non-existent where it's black but its in the same condition as where it isn't, I just couldn't get it to show in a picture for some reason. What do you think would be in the ballpark of what number it would grade? I sure appreciate the feedback

Great find, yet not very nice condition in my modest opinion. I agree with John1

Generally, the more you do to "clean" a coin the lower the value falls. I think it looks nice with the crust. A little acetone to take away any organic material without rubbing is all she needs. Nice find!

I appreciate the people who took the time to comment very much, that's an awesome collection, I mainly arrowhead hunt crockett and madison county tennessee but I've been going back and forth between here and the Florida panhandle the past few years, when I'm there I hunt jackson county. I find tons of stuff in Florida since they still deep plow but it's getting very tough around here with the no till. I added a picture from my last trip before heading back to tennessee a few months ago. Happy hunting.

to the CCF Nice ground find indeed! Your coin likely grades in the F15/VF20 range but corroded from its time underground so it would not 'straight grade' at any TPG. It had a mintage of 510,000 examples - so you're not going to retire if you sold it but could likely get in the $30 to $50 range. Personally - I would place it as-is in one of your arrowhead displays. @coinguy - thats an impressive set of displays!

Nice find. Might want to consider taking a metal detector over the area you found this.

Excellent find and I agree with jimbucks. Please go back to that area with a metal detector. There will probably be more coins or historical artifacts. Let us know what else you find.

Thanks everyone, I've found 2 other coins there and a buddy of mine has found one or two as well.this was the oldest and the last one I found was a dime that was stained green and red and I couldn't read the date but it's the dime we get back in change now so it can't be very old I dont think.i I looked on a historical topo map from the 50s (the app is called old maps for anyone wondering) and it shows there were 3 houses close together in the middle of the field but they're nonexistent now, there's brick and glass and porcelain and other random things scattered where it shows them being. All the coins we've found there have been a couple hundred yards from where the houses were except this one, it was probably close to a a quarter mile away, that field is 800 acres it's huge. there is a little bit of brick scattered there as well so maybe there was a house there too and it had been done away with long before the 1950s map was made and just wasn't recorded, I'm not sure. I bought a detector a few days after I found this coin I just haven't been motivated to take it with me but I'll take this as a sign that I need to and I will the next time I go. If I do any good I'll post what I find. Thanks again everyone this is a very helpful group and I am grateful for the feedback I hae received.
