I found these coins about 2 years ago in my grandfather's coffee can filled with pre 1965 dimes. They showed signs of toning, so I put them on my bedroom window sill. Hoping the sun and humidity might help speed up the process. 2 years later and they have progressed. I just flipped them to the reverse and am starting the process again. Getting there true colors to show on pictures has been difficult. I think I have original pictures from 2 years ago. I'll have to look when I have time. Thanks for looking.

Nice color but maybe you should have done the reverse first so when they are done the obverse isn't scuffed from sitting on the sill.

Honestly, I forget about it for months. My kids end up reminding me about it. They find it very interesting too. Yes, starting reverse up would be better, but the coins weren't BU or anything, so no biggie. The angle of the picture hides some imperfections.

I'm going to start a toning project too, I'm gathering Taco Bell napkins!

What's the fun in that, plus there would be no color.

Fun project, I have a permanent coin window sill - I've kept some coins on it for years. I have found good, thicker piece of cardboard to put them on works fine. You don't need any magic napkins. Every couple of months I'd flip them over. I have never achieved anything colorful or for that matter interesting doing this. I've put every kind of metal coin on the sill just to see what happens, they just "toned down" a little, some came out a lot darker, especially silver. There was not a single time I got nice color, just darkness! I'd say your doing well with color on yours but you really have to angle the coins to see it. That type of toning usually just looks brown/black when viewed perpendicularly - not very attractive IMO.

My original purpose of the window was to mess with PCGS and NGC. I had a few bagged Lincolns they noted as "questionable color" or just something they didn't like about the color. My dealer agreed with me they were wrong - all had MA toning. I busted them out, rinsed with acetone and put them in the sill for mellowing over a year or two. Guess what? He resubmitted them for me and they came back graded. This method should not be discounted by collectors as a way to naturally restore a coin or even to make cleaned coins look a bit better.

I guess great minds do think alike. I agree. The right light and angle play a big part, but the coins are more of a dull pale slate blueish with very minor rainbowing. I have cleaned them twice with acetone and a q-tip. I also keep this window open a majority of the time during spring and summer. I live on the water, a salt water bay is my backyard. Everything metal I own gets eaten up pretty fast.
