Woke up my friend, who actually did write The Book on Massachusetts colonial copper coins, at midnight to buy this coin when I saw it 'live'. I've been looking for and at Mass pennies for as long as he has, and I've never seen another either. I can't recall seeing it with a CT, NJ or VT colonial as well. Apparently, it was struck after, not before, a big chunk of laminated surface fell off the obverse. Maybe someone has another example? What's interesting about this one is the letter T2 of MASS... is clear at the edge on that bar that separates the two laminated fields: above the bar the metal separated after being struck, below that it separated before striking.

Looks like a defective planchet, and as such, there shouldn't be another one like it. Maybe other defective planchets, but they're all going to be unique.

robbudo: I'm asking if anyone else has a struck-on-a-delaminated-planchet colonial...
