OK, what I don't understand is why the forum commends someone for coin roll searching $0.05 Wheat cents that are far and few in between, but eschews collecting $0.03 copper cents that are a lot more common? If we're looking at things from a financial perspective.

I don't really understand the "value of your time" aspect.

If it is something you enjoy, then it's not a waste of time. Yes, if you've got a sweat shop operation running to harvest copper cents and you hate every minute of it, then yes, it's a poor use of time. If otherwise, no.

That is a good point. I know there are those who will scoff at keeping "common" wheat cents. I am not one of them. I keep every Wheat cent I find.

And for the record, I still keep copper cents; I am just not out there actively searching rolls for them (or any rolls at all now). I am not looking to profit, but to make sure they are available for future generations when the bulk ends up getting melted. They may just be common copper cents to us today, but so were Half Cents and large cents at one time.

At the end of the day, does it make you happy? If so, keep doing it! Do not let anyone talk you out of something you enjoy.

Keep in mind they made BILLIONS of memorial cents, you cannot equate them with half & large cents or even wheat cents. There will plenty of the common, circ and low MS grade coins for the next 100+ years IMO.

The real key to collecting memorials is looking for the gems in 66 up. Those are not common no matter what anyone says. Ask GP, he is the most determined person I've known in a quest for a complete collection in at least MS-67. It's VERY difficult!

@BadThad I think people are also waiting for the US government to do what the Canadian government did, which was to not only discontinue minting pennies, but also taking them back and melting them down. That reduced the penny population significantly, and increased the value of remaining pennies.

I inherited bags of Wheaties from my Mom. I separated them by date and then by mint and then put them in 2x2's and put them in binder sleeves and notebooks.

The rest of them, I bought a box of cent tubes and filled each tube. I went from 1909 forward to current (for fun).

It's just a thought. I still have more but, someday I'll start giving them away to collectors...maybe sooner than later.

Coins are better in sets IMO!

I always think relative to human population. Maybe I am overestimating how many will be melted or the number of future collectors.

10 years of melting later, and dealers are still depositing them in the bank. Unfortunately the remaining ones have not significantly risen in value yet. Perhaps in another 50 years?

Wow, and to think I've been wondering what to do with my 2,600 or so copper memorial cents hoarded from circulation and roll hunting over the course of my life. The fewer freezer bags full of junk I have around the house, the better. I don't just want to deposit them at my bank because I know they are worth more than face value.

Very little downside risk. I remember when it didn't make sense to toss 90% silver in a coffee can back in 1965-66.

Maybe some day in the far, far future someone would love to have one of our containers of copper cents.

True, but are they all this much fun?

The answer to the question, "Is it worthwhile to hoard copper pennies?" is subjective. If you enjoy it and no one gets hurt, then we should leave you alone.

This cannot happen fast enough in the USA! At this point pennies are utterly ridiculous. NOBODY here wants them, they won't even bother to pick them up from the ground. In America it's a government scam that they are still around and being made. It costs more in diesel fuel to move them around than they are worth!
