Quote: This cannot happen fast enough in the USA! At this point pennies are utterly ridiculous. NOBODY here wants them, they won't even bother to pick them up from the ground. In America it's a government scam that they are still around and being made. It costs more in diesel fuel to move them around than they are worth! Quoted for Truth.

ive always thought that the cost of manufacture is a poor measure of the value of making a coin. its ok for it to cost more than face value. they facilitate commerce. they allow multiple transactions to take place. how many dollars worth of transactions has a continuously circulating 1965 quarter facilitated? its manufacture was certainly worth more than a quarter.
the cent is functionally worthless in commerce so thats a problem. the fact that they cost more than a cent to make isn't inherently problematic.

BadThad... Nobody? Perhaps most people, but not everyone. If I see one on the ground, I'll scoop it up. I trust all who have strong feelings about discontinuing the Lincoln Cent are persistent in pressuring their elected representatives.

Here we go again! When I am elected emperor, the first thing I am doing is putting the image of Liberty back on all our money. Second thing I will do is eliminate the cent, nickel, quarter, and bills below the five. Everyone will be so happy about the first thing they will not notice the second.

I was able to obtain a few hundred dollars of Canadian pennies since they dropped them for face value and, combined with box hunting and change culls over the last 20 years amassed a pretty substantial hoard.
All this took room to store and this past summer I decided to slim down the stuffage around the house, this was a part of it. I saved any pre-1960 US and pre-1970 Canadian cents as well as any "S" mint US's. I kept a roll of each post-1960/1970 penny date/mint/variety combo (82 copper/zinc, Canadian steel/zinc etc.) and CoinStarred the rest to an Apple gift card to avoid the service fees. Of course they would not take the steel Canadians but the zinc ones went right thru.
I did the CoinStar dumps separately so if someone comes across a large stash of Canadian pennies in US rolls in the SW US it is a good bet they came from me.
All in all I dumped about $300.00 in Canadian and almost $800 in US pennies. I used the proceeds to buy a new iPad and am happy for it. Other than holding on to them for some future profit there was no real reason to keep them. If there comes a time when we revert to copper being a barter commodity the last thing I want to do is have to drag around hundreds of pounds of base metals in my Mad Max desert runner.

I pick up any coins I find on the ground, in parking lots, etc. I'll even check the change slots of vending machines - you wouldn't believe how often people forget to take their change, especially on a university campus. I probably average $20-$25 in 'found money' per month.

9,111 copper pennies and counting, excluding Wheaties and Canadians. Or 9,487 copper pennies, including Wheaties and Canadians.
Don't judge me :-)
