PCGS accidentally dips client's 132-year-old coin. That was not a good move. Cost them 70% of the value of the coin too.

In another Facebook post, Sutton had this advice for collectors using PCGS and other third-party grading services: "Take pictures of the front and the back of each coin. Keep the pictures until after you receive your coins back after the many months it's taking them to grade these days."

Ya think?

I don't, nor have not, submitted coins in a long, long time on their own to the TPGs, I either buy them slabbed or keep the coins raw. But last time I checked seriously (pre pandemic times) it was around a 4-5 month turn around at PCGS.

EDIT: I should add that was for economy service, of course you can pay and get faster service at different tier and commensurate pricing as well. From show 24 hour walk through to a day or two.

I wonder if the MS63 was after the "conservation"? I would be so heartbroken. The 70% payoff would only partly assuage my grief.

The coin, one of only 93 reported by PCGS, earned a grade of Mint State-63 as the eighth highest-graded example in the firm's population report.

i think this is good advice even if you arent submitting a coin.

its good to have a record for insurance. its easier to quick reference than pulling the coins out of the safe or bank vault or whatever (you can even take your photos to the coin show and compare your coins to potential upgrades). it allows you to track environmental problems over time. it allows you to track if the toning or patina are stable. I'm sure there are other reasons but those were what popped into my mind off the bat.

In a world where the majority (it seems) doesn't want to be accountable for anything I was waiting for a customer service horror story, but instead I'm pleasantly surprised.

I tamke pictures of every coin that crosses my desk before being placed in its final resting place, whether it be a Dansco Album, 2x2's or still in OGP mint sets.

I'm with Pacificoin, Hardly a rare coin. but still what if it was a rare or unique coin, or a family heirloom where money cannot compensate nor buy a replacement.
What steps have they taken to ensure this NEVER happens again?
