It was named this, because it looks like it has a wing, when the break is bigger. If the die lasts long enough, it will have a die crack that reaches the tail of the 9.

Check out, DC-1c-1952D-01. It was a flying d at some point, with the crack going to the 9 and then just turned into a blob.

I thought the same thing, coop but the OP's mm is further north and east. It may be a minor RPM though.
