What do we all make of the grade of this 1881 S? I paid $70, looks like it might be gem under that toning. Please see video also.

This is a tough one.. The apparent lack of a cartwheel on the obverse. virtually clean fields, I feel the toning could be hiding something.
But I think I would say ms64

I'll say MS details (cleaned and artificially re-toned).

Frog called it out as AT, so Toby how did it get toned? Was it album, paper, leather pouch, envelope, wood, cigar box, jewelry box, bank bag, cloth, etc. I am not sure if the toning is AT or NT. It does appear to have a couple of scratches on the right side of the eagle's breast and maybe on the cheek and neck. The toning is not adding any value to the example. Were you planning on dipping to find a gem under the toning?

tough call with all that blotchy toning. typically its either improperly cleaned (not rinsed properly after dipping) or improper storage and exposed to higher humidity.

now for grade. the 81(S) should be sharp and bold. under that toning I'm seeing what looks like some wear on the wheat ears and on the high points in the hair however the toning could be masking what we are seeing. the vid is too small to help.

AU or UNC (details) if you twisted my arm i'd go with UNC. definitely not Gem under the toning. UNC details slabbed coins are selling for about $40-50 and a raw coin looking very similar to this asking $68.

you would have to spend the $$ to see if it graded straight(which is not worth it). the highest if it did would be MS63 and a decent 63 is about $100, this would not qualify for that value due to the eye appeal.

I'm with Frog ,
Questionable Colour .
Once improperly dipped.
Obverse just does not look
great . The coin just does not " Pop" .
Not even close to being a slab candidate
due to the costs involved.

Thanks for the comments. I don't think it is artificially toned, if it was then they did a bad job. It's very ugly toning and very dark on the top of the reverse. I do agree that it may have had a dip in the past which would explain the blotchy toning patches.
The only dipping I have done, is with modern proofs and not to get rid of toning but to rid it of any surface gunk etc. I am unable to get your US Ezest cleaner, but I've used one called Hagerty's Silver Dip which has similar ingredients. From my experience, dipping it would not get rid of the toning. Also, I've never dipped for more than about 5 seconds at VERY MAXIMUM, mostly I only do 2 seconds or so because any more can start to eat away at the lustre. I've done a few Morgans in the past but not for toning, and they came back straight graded. Even though it can be seen as a big no no, it does do wonders sometimes.
In hand: The surfaces under the toning look original to me and any damage such as the lines on the cheek are extremely superficial.

Quite a reach to Gem for this one. Looks to have rub on the cheek and above the ear. But a very good strike. Original toning. MS 63

I cannot see this in a gem holder.

I don't like the toning and I personally would have passed.
