Hi all,

The rim of this coin is raised above the coin such that it is like a picture frame. I have tried to take a good pic just to show what I mean but this is he best I could do.

Is this called a Deep Struck? If not, What is it called?

Another thing, Could anybody tell me what is that in Lincolns head. I have thought of placing the coin in acetone to try to remove the back substance but I am afraid I would damage it since I don't know how to use acetone with coins.

Regarding myself I see it as an "S"!!

If you are talking about the think raised rim from the L in LIBERTY to the I in the word IN, then I think this is a small fin. As I understand it, fins are caused from a combination of one or both instances of high striking pressure and a planchet thickness on the high side of the tolerance. The pressure of the strike causes the metal to flow out between the die and the collar creating a thin sometimes knifelike edge. I think yours is a slight version of this. See what others say.

And these are very common on 1973 cents because of the depth of the design used that year.
Rest in Peace

Is that also true for 1972s? I've noticed a lot of raised edges.

No I am talking about the raised rim caused by the raised coin edge. The coin edge is raised all around the coin as if its a frame.

The raised rim you see is caused by the difference in the design for 1973 from surrounding years. It's normal. 1972 is also known to look like this.

The shape you are seeing on the head is carbon corrosion. Acetone will do nothing to help this. It's there permanently.
