Like all treasure hunting its use common sense I picked up 4 rolls of 1979 50 cents the other week on ebay - 45$ each , on a hunch that they may be something else - sure enough they were all Double Bar variety, mint condition obviously. ebay , like all forums , has some BS to wade through but there are some gems hiding in there if you can put up with the rubbish . Try looking at gumtree - lots more scoundrels there too , it seem like the con artists are all online these days

From the Mint site..." It is a criminal offence under the Crimes (Currency) Act 1981 (Cth) to deface or destroy current Australian currency coins. It is also an offence to sell or possess current coins that have been defaced. Defacing a coin includes coating the surface of the money with any sort of material. The penalty for defacing coins, or selling or possessing money that has been defaced, is $11,100 or imprisonment for two years for an individual (or both), and $22,200 for a body corporate. You may also be guilty of the offence of making counterfeit money if you alter a genuine coin". Some big risks there for both vendor and purchaser. Hard to believe people could be so stupid. A quick look at some sold items on ebay shows that they are out there.

Seller on ebay about to strike it rich this morning. Has listed a 4.5kg tin of Australian coins for sale. Two bidders are trying to win it with the current bid at $16,100.00. If the tin was full of $2 coins it would be only about $680 worth. Buyer beware and all that.... If the 'winner' is lucky there is 1930 penny in that tin but gee what a gamble?
