I got my start on Mercury dimes in a bag of "junk" silver 30 years ago. I've been tweaking this collection ever since. From time to time I've put them on the back burner to work on something else but it seems that I always come back to the Mercury dimes. Of all the different coins I collect these just seem to be more of a work of art to me than the others. Does anybody else fell this way?

I don't collect many US coins, but Mercs have always attracted me, so

Yes, I definitely agree. One of the best looking coins ever produced by the U.S. I recently started collecting the series and putting them in an album. I got a long way to go but am having a blast. I've also decided to pick up a proof version so I can have a "shining" example of a beautiful coin.

Welcome to the forum. Mercs are a beautiful coin. I got started on Mercury dimes the same way. My father let me a bag of junk silver about 5 years ago, had a lot of fun searching through them. GLG

I think they are beautiful and nostalgic for me because when I was small they were still in circulation. Using the collection my Uncle gave me for a start, I just completed the whole date and mint set, but in circulated condition.

1. It's a great design. 2. It's got a lot of history (and we see it - handed down to us) 3. RARE dates - that's ESSENTIAL before a series becomes popular 4. Errors/Varieties (whatever you want to call them) 42/1, Trumpet S, etc. And the fact that my Mother handed over a small pin box of Mercury dimes to me that she had saved during the WAR.

The 16-D is an AG-3. The rest average F-12.

well, I do like mercs but I think you fall in love with what ever you start with. I started with the barber series and I think they along with the Liberty nickels are truly more thought out in design. But that is just me, as for more of work of art. I would have to say older notes are a work of art, so gorgeous but that I guess if you like them as much as I do :P

I'm currently working on a set in EF/AU. But as for the 16-D I'll have to go with AG03, and the semi keys in F/VF. I really enjoy working this set and I found couple of mercs with nice toning.

I figure it will take most of my life to finish the set in nice condition, but that is part of the fun.
