I have some old whitman folders with Buffalo nickels in them. I noticed I had two that had the 1914d spot filled but you cant see the 1914. what should I do to see if they really are 1914's?

The 1914-D is a semi-key for the Buffalo nickel series and a somewhat expensive piece, relatively speaking.
There's always that chemical called nic-a-date, which is a solution that brings up the date but leaves an unsightly stain on the coin. Other folks have been using vinegar soaking to raise dates with varying results (a search for "vinegar" should reveal these threads.

Most likely the previous owner of your folder couldn't find or afford a 1914-D so replaced that year with no-date coins as fillers.

Well I have several of these whitman folders with buffalos in them. The coins were my dads possibly my grandads so I am sure there old as dirt. there are some more in there that you can barley read the date on also. They are not stored in the best of enviorment either. I need to look at them through a magnifier to see if I see anything. When you say vinegar you mean like apple cider vinegar that is brown or just the clear vinegar?

Do the two coins in the 1914-D slots at least have the "D" mint mark on them?

oh yeah they do. I actually would put money on them being a 1914. They have just been unprotected in a whitman folder in a high humidity area probably for 40 years or more. I feel if he were just filling holes he wouldhave put something in all the empty holes in there
