As the title says, what would you grade this 1916D Mercury dime? Additionally, what would be a good price to pay for it? I'll post the actual grade after a few replies so as to not influence the responses! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Really nice AG-3 to me. Price wise, they seem to be selling in the $650-$800 range

I call it borderline G-4 with a value of about $1000

NGC will give it the Key Date Bump to G4 despite the lack of full rims. Still better than the one I don't own!!

NGC graded it straight AG-3. This is my first 16D, and I've been looking to pick this coin up for a while. Before I did, I looked at various examples in the AG-VG range and tried to get an idea of what each looked like and what they typically go for. This is one of those times that given the history of the 16D, I really didn't want to buy something raw. When I saw this one at a show, I felt like it was at worst a really good AG example, but could possibly grade G4. Kinda like someone said, maybe it's a 3.9!
Before posting this thread, I looked at 16 different G4 examples currently up for auction, and of those 16 I felt like this one was in better condition than 7 of the G4s. Of the remaining 9, there were really only 4 or 5 that looked obviously better and two of those were CAC'd.
Now I'm wondering if I should resubmit it and see if it comes back higher. I'd like to eventually upgrade it every now and again, so if it did come back as a 4, it would be a lot easier to resell it to help finance when the time comes that I find a VG or F that I like. What do you guys think?

Very nice! It is a really nice clean original example. You could also send it to CAC, where I am pretty sure it would bean. That would help resale value as well.

Many of the AG graded coins are worn well into the mintmark. Yours is nice and clear. Unsure if I would re-submit. A potential buyer will look at the coin and many may consider it under graded at AG3, making for an easy sale.

I think it will make G-4.

i agree with the G4's. CAC candidate which would add a nice value to the coin.
a PCGS AG3 with a green bean sold for $1095 in November. on average PCGS graded G4's sell for between $1000 & $1200.

that is a solid coin that speaks for itself and would bring a nice price at auction with present grade a strong AG-3 with eye appeal like that will beat a blackened ugly G-4 any day. One fine dime.
