Recently spent a few days in Reykjavik, Iceland. Great place to visit, but not much going on for coin collectors or banknotes either. Most people pay for everything with credit cards, only saw two cash transactions the whole time I was there, so didn't expect to find any dedicated coin dealers.

Went to the flea market one day and found several vendors selling coins, stamps, and some banknotes. One vendor had several binders filled with hundreds of pages of krónur and aura coins neatly sorted by denomination, just page after page of tiny coins. Also had a few world coins but nothing I needed. Still fun to flip!

I think Iceland discontinued its aura coins back in the 80s but banks accepted them till 2003 (I had to lok that up!) so those are very easy to find. In fact, one vendor had a tub of Icelandic coins for sale. Price was
1,000 kr for a cup full. That's about U$7 for a cup, which was more than I would pay but some kids were having a great time filling their cups that day.

Also saw another vendor selling mostly old postcards and FDC stamps, but he had a few Iceland mint sets celebrating the old krona (1944 - 1980).

Anyway, overall it was a fun visit, just didn't find anything I needed.

Here's a pic of the coin bucket:

Neat!
Looks like my LCS world coin bin, but they charge 5/$1.

I've pulled some very lightly circulated 1950s/1960s coins from Denmark and Norway out of it, but never seen Iceland. I suspect that might change.

Love the tub, that looks pretty sturdy to carry all the coins. For an island country of 300,000 or so people, it's nice there's a few coin collectors there. Thanks for sharing!

Very interesting! That bucket looks like fun, at least for the kids.

Can confirm there is now a few dealers at the flea market in town with very similiar buckets, each have the same sized cups, with the same price. There is also a dealer with a bunch of world currency who had some icelandic mint/proof sets. More pricy than online comps, but everything in iceland is more expensive.

Oh and if anyone is trying to get all the modern icelandic notes, there are a bunch of ATMs around town. Some of them let you choose which denominations you can get, so go for one of them that will let you select one of each.

I've been to the flea market several times, and often get coins there - yes, the coins-by-the-cup thing is very fun! I stand there and fill my cup intentionally, rather than just dipping it in.

Alas, when I was there in January, the flea market was having some kind of issue and wasn't open. I'm hoping that those issues have been resolved and things will be back to normal (I travel there two to four times a year; hence my nickname here).
