I found this cent in change as a kid and it has always been a curiosity to me.
What do you think caused this? I have my own theories of course..

Unless you were there at the time, you might never find out exactly what happened
but the fact that it could not have happened at the mint makes it PMD

Fuse box theory is very interesting indeed! Makes more sense than the penny stopping a bullet during WWI...(my personal theory).

I don't think so you would be able to see the hot spots from the arcing which I do not see

If we can exchange somewhere will still an cent, if not, for me it is just a zinc disk with some traces of a Wheat cent.

I have to agree with I6609 about the burn marks....as far as I know it was not altered in any way. I found this coin in 1972 and it looked pretty much as it does today.
Still very interesting 1911....
