I think that rather than extra metal from say a die chip, the diagonal line visible in the second and third bays from the left is most likely from die subsidence as @halo mentioned. I suppose it could also be evidence of a die clash.

This happened on several dies that year.

My guess on what happened? Probably these dies were not tempered correctly. Thus the crushed under the pressure of the strike. That year has the strongest rims, so they probably couldn't take the added pressure. But because if happened to a few dies, I'm still thinking the subsidence issue was a poor tempering/no tempering issue. (Why would that come to my mind?) Well because if happened on few dies, and not all of them. Also that year they were still using the old process of annealing the dies between the hub processing. Thus these dies were probably not tempered the last time after the last hub process. (My thought, I've not read this anywhere before, but think this did happened on these dies) The rest of the dies didn't have this issue.

Another reason could be grease on the die so it was a filler in the void of the die of that area?

It is a collapse of the metal. It is raised, where a Grease Fill would be level. (The die is dented inwards, leaving the affected area raised on the coin)
