I recently bought a 1971 Brown Ike proof. At first I thought a "Brown Ike" referred to the color of the packaging, but I guess it really means the color of the coin.

My-

I tried cracking open the case only to find it come apart all too easily. Someone had already opened this one. Then I saw scuff marks over the "71" going straight up and down. What a wreck! Oh well, it cost me $5.

Seeing that this proof is ruined, it's a good candidate for experimentation. Acetone has very little effect but it does come off after a brief soaking and gentle agitation with a Q-tip. So what is this brown stuff?

Exposure to environment. Looks organic. Ya, I'd try acetone. At this point, what do you have to lose.

The "brown" and "blue" Eisenhower (40% Silver) dollars are notorious for this interesting cloudy tone. I recall reading that something in the planchet wash caused this to happen, but I am not certain if that is true.

The brown cases are not really sealed; they are just snapped together (I opened all of mine to put them in the Dansco). All of my 40% Silver proof Eisenhower dollars (with exception of 1976 proof and uncirculated, which are part of a three piece set and not in the Brown or Blue packages) have this haze. I have never tried to "correct" it in fear of doing further damage.

The good news is that the tone has not spread or changed since I moved them to the Dansco.
