Is this from being in the ground and covered? I believe if it was missing a clad layer it would be a goldfish color not this correct?

@char, it is hard to know what specifically has caused this odd surface color—could be ground burial, chemical exposure, etc. I'm not seeing any 3vidence of a missing clad layer though. What is the weight?

If it was missing a clad layer, it would be weakly struck.
The weight to two decimal points should verify what you have.

It weighs 5.5 grams on my food scale and my other 1984 is 5.6. It doesn't go to hundredths.

Just a stained coin. On a missing clad it will be red colored like a BU cent color. There is a coating on your coin. When wiped off the edge, then you will see the normal coin on your coin. On a missing clad, the color will be red and never show any of the normal clad color.

Note the weakened devices? That is from the missing clad thickness that was missing because of the clad not being present on this coin.
