Thought I'd take DAVISCFAD advice and start a new thread. Got mine Friday . UPS just left at the door. No signature. I was so looking forward to seeing this coin. I had ordered it the first hour or two when they came online and waiting this long to receive it. Well the coin itself is beautiful, but the one I received is terrible. The first thing I noticed was a large black spot in the upper left corner of the X in the date. Can be seen with the naked eye. Then looking under a loop it almost had a gouge type effect to it. I guess it could be lint stuck to the die. I'm so disappointed, because there is no way I can keep it with this mark, but if I send it back I'm afraid it will take months before I see another My pictures are never to good, but I did try to post the spot for you to see. What do you think. Lint? What a shame. Edited by treasurehunter 03/08/2009 2:07 pm

Ouch. I'm not sure what that is, but I agree with you. It doesn't look good at all. I would call up the mint and press for a timely exchange.

I'm also surprised to see what looks like heavy die polishing marks. What is all that between the rays? After all, this is a collector coin.

Are these pictures of the coin in the airtight? If so, have you ever taken it out to make sure that mark isn't just on the plastic? When I took mine out of the airtight it was the first time I had ever worn a dust mask along with using gloves.

I do plan on returning. Since I ordered on Jan 22, I still have the 30 day return. 7 day went into effect Feb 10th I think. They just make it very confusing because the book is being shipped separately. I don't know if I can return it without the book, which I have not received yet. Also want to make sure I would not be charged the higher price on the exchange. It's just very disappointing to wait all this time and then get this! These pictures are in the airtight container, I did open it up without removing the coin to see if the lint would come off, but no luck. I've heard others talk of lint marks on the coins which tend to leave a black type of mark. There are also heavy die polish marks.

akglen I think the coin is in just a plastic holder for shipping not an air-tite. Only reason I said anything was b.c I didnt want you to think your coin was totally air-tite when its not. just for storage sake not trying to nitpick you so please dont take it that way Treasurehunter I would do as someone else suggested as akglen suggested and take the plastic case off. If the coin is bad I would not postpone getting a return b/c the mint could say well you placed the order before that date but we did not charge your card until so and so date and thats after that affective date. Just my 2 cents. I know you just got the coin and want to keep viewing it. But I would seriously go on and send it back b/c next year at this time you will be mad with yourself if you dont.

I bought a ASE proof a month ago. After I got it home I decided to take a closer look at it. It seems that the die was faulty in my coin. The dress of liberty has what looks like raised beads streaming down it in the middle of the dress. Three beads that are very pronounced. I though about taking it back and exchanging it for another, but then I thought, this may be a variety. We don't yet know what the numbers are on proofs minted is, and I'm thinking that having a variety might be nice. After all, I bought if for bullion only in the first place.... Maybe the coin is lesser for what it is, maybe not. I don't know. I decided to keep it. It is in a air tight container. There is no question that it is unaltered. This is how it was delivered by the mint. I can imagine that I would be more picky about a gold coin than I would be over a ASE. Understandably. The investment amount is vastly different. ..........now that I think about it. You need to get a replacement for your coin. I can't see that kind of error becoming a valued coin. Gold is simply not treated the same. Gold coins don't seem to follow the same rules that say...pennies might play. It seems that the higher the bullion value, the less that errors are accepted as a desirable trait among collectors. Seems odd. What would a DD high relief bring? If there was ever such a coin slip into circulation..............

Treasurehunter, I had a similar problem on the reverse of an ASE. I opened up the capsule and found the lint was actually on the capsule itself. I personally had no problem opening up the capsule on a $31.00 ASE, but I would have to seriously think about opening up the capsule on a UHR. If you plan on returning, I would do it soon. I have spoken to the Mint at their new facility, and they are not the most informed people out there. Even though you placed your order before February 10, they might still give you a hard time and assume all returns since February 10 have the 7 day return policy. I am only saying this, because even though their "new policy" is to require a signature, they still left it on your door step without one.

I got mine today. I work at the airport so I stopped the UPS truck and I wouldn't let him off the tarmac until he gave it to me. (nobody at home).
Packaging was superb. I love the wooden display box.
Its smaller than I thought...and fat. With my eye, I think I can see a small scratch but I have to get it home and under the scope to be sure.
Treasurehunter...Sorry to hear about your "lint" thing. I hope they can get you a replacement fast.

Took about 20 minutes, but I got through to the mint today. They can not give me any time frame of receiving a replacement Even asked if I'm assured a replacement, she say's "I don't know". That was my fear of returning in the first place, but I really don't think I can keep it looking like this. They don't even know their replacement time frame, she says I have 7 days even though I ordered on Jan 22. I read her this from their own web site: If you ordered your 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin between January 22, 2009, and February 9, 2009, you are under the 30-day return policy. If you ordered on or after February 10, 2009, you are under the seven-day return policy. The return timeframe for the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold COIN will begin on the date you receive it. Asked her to make a note stating that I have 30 days not 7. She says they may send it back if they think I only have 7 days, so I guess I'll have to get it out by tomorrow just to make sure. Chadwick: I think your right, I have never heard of of DD high relief either. I did think about that, but I'm pretty sure this is just lint which pressed into the die. As far as value, I don't think it would increase. I'm with you, I think it would only lower the value, and I would not want to sell it to somebody without them knowing about this spot. I'm just afraid the mint will never get another one back to me! Remember it's to their advantage, I bought at the lowest price, so will have to replace with a higher price on gold!
